professionalism.
Medical Services
Primary/Family Medicine
Comprehensive primary care services, including annual physicals, immunizations and sick care, are offered at three UCP Suffolk Health Center locations for adults and children. Board certified physicians and nurse practitioners provide primary medical care and coordinate the specialty care needs of each patient. With an emphasis on health promotion and wellness, providers offer patients as well as their families and care givers education and support toward their personal health goals.
Gynecology
Gynecological services and education are offered by a nurse practitioner at two of the UCP Suffolk Health Center sites. At the main Central Islip site, all of the exam tables are height adjustable to allow patients to safely transfer to the tables with ease and dignity.
Neurology
The knowledgeable, medical professionals on staff at the UCP Suffolk Health Center diagnose symptoms and/or disease involving the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. Neurology services are offered at three locations. One of the Neurologists on the medical staff is also board certified in Pediatrics and Genetics.
Orthopedics
The UCP Suffolk Health Center provides both pediatric and adult Orthopedic care for the prevention of injuries and correction of impairments and disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints and ligaments. Orthopedic services are available at the Health Center in Central Islip.
Dermatology
Through accurate diagnosis and treatment expert Dermatologists on staff at the Health Center treat and help prevent diseases of the skin. Dermatology services are available at the Health Center in Central Islip.
Ophthalmology
The Ophthalmology Department in the Central Islip site boasts a freestanding eye exam machine, which can be moved or adjusted to a patient’s wheelchair height if transfer to an exam chair is not an option. The UCP Suffolk Health Center Ophthalmologists focus on the well-being and diseases of the visual pathways of the eye and areas surrounding the eye. Complete eye exams are available.
Podiatry
Experienced Podiatrists at all three of the UCP Suffolk Health Center locations diagnose, treat and prevent diseases of the human foot. The procedures performed by the professional, caring doctors include debridement and trimming of nails. Many patients are diabetic and have more urgent and complicated needs. When necessary, orthotics and braces are recommended.
Physiatry
Physiatry, also known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or PM&R, is unique among medical fields and is an area of expertise at the UCP Suffolk Health Center. Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how individuals move. Rather than focus on a single organ or system, Physiatrists evaluate the functioning of the whole patient. The physiatrist at the UCP Suffolk Health Center is a leader in Spasticity evaluation and management, offering treatments such as intramuscular Botox injections and Baclofen pumps.
Emphasis is placed on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders, particularly those of the neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems that may produce temporary or permanent impairment. The Physiatrist works with the other members of the Rehabilitation team to ensure optimal function for each patient.
Dental Services
General dentistry is available at two Suffolk Health Center sites. Dental hygiene services as well as procedures such as fillings, root canals, simple extractions, bridges and dentures are provided.
At the Central Islip location, four oversized dental suites are equipped with height adjustable, dual swivel dental chairs, making it easier for patients to transfer. Track lighting makes dental examinations easier for those patients who may have difficulty tilting their head back.
Each suite offers digital x-ray equipment, providing a clearer more detailed image of the teeth and an ability to send images electronically. In addition to traditional dental x-rays, the Central Islip site also features a state of the art digital panoramic x-ray system, allowing full mouth x-rays to be taken at once.
Mental Health Services
Psychiatry
Both adult and pediatric Psychiatry are offered at the Central Islip and Port Jefferson sites. The UCP Suffolk Health Center team of Psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners provides diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, including medication management.
Neuropsychological/Psychological Testing
A variety of psychological testing, which includes neuropsychological and psychosocial assessments, is offered at two of the UCP Suffolk Health Center sites. Both individual and group mental health counseling is provided by expert mental health professionals with expertise and specialized training in developmental and physical disabilities.
Mental Health Counseling
Mental Health Counseling services are offered at the Central Islip and Port Jefferson sites. The services encompass the application of principles of psychotherapy, human development, learning theory, group dynamics, and the etiology of mental illness and dysfunctional behavior. Clinical social workers treat individuals, couples, families and groups for psychopathology and to promote optimal mental health.
Rehabilitation Services
Physical Therapy
The UCP Health Center at Central Islip features a state of the art gym with specially designed accessible exercise equipment to help patients regain or improve their physical abilities. A unique indoor training ramp and stairs with a 90 ft. indoor track provide an ideal setting for ambulation training.
Electrically operated high/low tables allow for ease of transfers for individuals who have limitations in mobility. The center boasts equipment adapted to assist individuals with a spectrum of abilities. Therapists develop and implement a unique plan of treatment for each patient to improve mobility, gross motor skills, and ambulation, encouraging increased independence.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapists in the Central Islip site use productive or creative activities in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities. They also develop and carry out a customized treatment plan, which helps to improve an individual’s fine motor and daily living skills. Experienced Occupational Therapy professionals provide an array of daily living and occupational services in an on-site adapted room and training apartment. Assessments for electronic aides for daily living are also provided in the training apartment. There is a specialized computer assessment lab for adapted computer recommendations.
Speech/Language Pathology
Speech therapy is available at the Hauppauge and Central Islip Health Center sites. Skilled Speech Therapists provide evaluations and treatment in the areas of vocalization, pronunciation and communication. Evaluation and training on augmentative communication devices and swallowing and feeding evaluations are also available from our Speech Therapists.
Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology products enable people with disabilities to accomplish daily living tasks and assist them with communication, education, work or recreation activities to help achieve greater independence and an enhanced quality of life. Therapists at the UCP Health Center in Central Islip assist individuals with equipment that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities including manual and power wheelchairs, adapted computers and speech devices. Physical and Occupational Therapists also provide assistance with orthotics and splintering.
Dedicated to facilitating an individual’s mobility and independence, UCP Health Center staff assist in the maintenance of equipment through the Assistive Technology workshop.
Audiology
The UCP Health Center in Central Islip is home to a state of the art Audiology testing booth where Audiologists provide evaluations and education for individuals with hearing loss. The booth’s design features oversized doors and a window to allow for easier access, patient comfort and better visibility of the patient for the audiologist. |
